Why 'Ty - Capten?'
Ty Capten (pronounced 'Tea Capten') means 'Captain's House' and was the farms name long before my family came here. Who the mysterious Captain was we have yet to discover he could have been a ship's captain, as the sea is not too far away or perhaps he was involved with mining where supervisors were sometimes called Captains.
My family have been farming the land at Ty Capten for the past 90 years, in my Grandfather's day it was very much a mixed farm with cows, horses, sheep, pigs and a few chickens. Now we just keep sheep and some chickens to supply fresh eggs for our farmhouse breakfasts.
We diversified into the tourism business and decided to convert the redundant stable and granary into a high quality holiday cottage, which has 3 en suite bedrooms, a living and dining room and its own kitchen. In 2010 I was awarded 5 stars by visit Wales for my farmhouse bed & breakfast accommodation, and I like to offer my guests a home from home stay.
I belong to the farm stay tourism group and also my local tourism group which offers B&B and self catering in Monmouthshire Down Our Lane and also listed on UK Bed and Breakfast - BNBSelect.
